LiFePO₄ has first been introduced as a potential cathode material for Lithium batteries by Dr John .Under its pure form, the Olivine-structured material showed specific capacities up to 110 mAh/g.

Introducing Nano-painting of LiFePO₄ with a Carbon electronic conductor, Hipowertek Lithium produced cathode material with specific capacities as high as 165 mAh/g, very close to the maximum theoretical capacity of 170 mAh/g.
